Our Council The Project Photos News / Press FAQS

Citizens of the East Bay:
The Kickemuit River Council (KRC) has voted to oppose the location of the LNG Terminal in Fall River. This terminal is a threat to all of us--and our friends in Fall River, Swansea, Somerset, Portsmouth, and all. We testified at the hearings held by the Bristol Town Council and the Warren Town Council. Mr. Lima and Eric presented the horrific facts for us. You, your children, your environment are in jeopardy. Not only will the escort needed cost you money, not only will the four bridges need to be shut down, and you will wait, but in some places the tankers are 25 feet from where a rocket could be launched--never mind the danger from a small boat loaded with explosives. If the ship is pierced and explodes, it will be equal to the destruction of 63 Hiroshima bombs!! If the plant explodes from a terrorist act OR a safety mishap, it would be equal to 84 Hiroshima bombs. Within a mile you would have 30 SECONDS to seek shelter or receive 3rd degree burns. Within 60 seconds, all wooden structures would start to burn. There would be a "thermal radiation zone" reaction in a five mile radius. You could burn your lungs breathing the air!! These facts come from Professor Emeritus Michael Fay from MIT and former Chairman of the Massachusetts Port Authority.
We are not arguing LNG. We are saying that location in Fall River, Somerset, or Providence is IRRESPONSBILE!! We are not this industry's dumping ground. Your lives and property are at stake. What can you do? We have worked out a plan. Please take the time to help. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has devised a plan to take away States' rights and leave it up to them! You must act now: Write, E-mail, Website, Call--better yet--do all four. Here is the contact info:

What do you say?: l. You do NOT want the decision on LNG siting to be taken away from the States. 2. You do NOT want LNG sited in Fall River, Somerset, Swansea, or Providence. 3. You do NOT want this LNG Terminal because of the danger of the possibility of safety error, or terrorists' attacks. We do NOT need another 9/11.

If you have time, you may add: 4. You do not want to pay for the costs of surveillance for the Coast Guard or others. 5. We do NOT want to each pay for the inevitable rise in our homeowners' insurance rates. 6. We do NOT want our time wasted with bridges shut down once a week and traffic waiting: Newport Bridge, Mt. Hope Bridge, Braga Bridge, Brightman Bridge. 7. We do NOT want Mt. Hope Bay dredged. (Fall River has separated its' storm water from sewage water and the Bay's fecal count is so impressive! (Many thanks, Fall River, and all of you who worked with the KRC to get Fall River the funding for the project.)

Look at Providence! The plant has NOT been maintained and now this industry wants the deficient facility grandfathered in!! Is this responsible? What about the dredging/ continual dredging in Mt. Hope Bay! What about the restricting of summer boating and shellfishing?!! It is your life.

At the Bristol LNG hearing, a man asked the LNG rep about how much money the company had expended on pushing this in such an INAPPROPRIATE location. He would not answer. Then he asked who their law firm was and was Baker in the law firm. The rep said,"YES!" Then he asked if this was the same Baker on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and he said,"YES!" This is the committee that wants to take away States' right to complain. Isn't this a conflict of interest.

Letters are very effective! Young people's letters are meaningful. Please take action. Your lives, our lives, their lives depend on this action. We are grateful.
